Attach a sponge lightly saturated with oil to your rolling mill. Place one sponge above the top roller and one sponge below the bottom roller. As you use the mill, the sponges will keep the rollers clean and the oil will keep them from rusting. Before you use it, turn the rollers on complete turn to clean any dust or debris that has accumulated on the rollers. You can keep the sponges in place with binding wire. Just make sure you keep everything away from the gears.
When rounding out the rings from sizing use a double face mallet, brass on one side nylon on the other. Use the nylon side to straighten out the ring shank. Like a rawhide mallet it will bend the shank but not stretch it. Then if the ring is a little too small (quarter size or less) turn the hammer around in your hand and tap across the seam with the brass side. This saves time from putting down the rawhide mallet and picking up a steel hammer then going back to the rawhide mallet.
To measure the size of a finger with a large knuckle, take an inexpensive set of plastic ring sizers and cut a slit in them with a fine saw blade. Then when measuring with them, they will open to go over the knuckle and you can measure the finger for a proper fit of an adjustable shank.
Purchase a basket type permanent coffee filter and place in your sink. Then, when draining your ultrasonic cleaner place the drain tube in the coffee filter. Any stones or other small articles will be caught in the filter and not go down the drain.
Items with loose stones can also be put in the filter and placed in the ultrasonic cleaner. Then, if any stones fall out they will be caught in the filter rather than dropping to the bottom of the cleaner.
While cutting a seat, use light even pressure. Excessive pressure to vigorously cut metal will over heat the burs. This heat will remove the temper from the tool and it will no longer be able to keep a sharp cutting edge. Let the tool do the work. Do Not Use Excessive Speed Or Pressure To Force A Dull Bur.
Arrange setting burs in order in a bur block. Then write on the block by each hole the size of the bur in millimeters. When setting stones, you will not waste time looking for and measuring the correct size bur.
To put black background on jewelry I use Rustoleum heat resistant paint. The kind you would spray your engine block with or your BBQ. I keep a spray can handy and spray a little in an old film canister and dab on as needed. I like to heat in a low oven (125 to 150 Fahrenheit until dry)
