Flush Setting Diamonds

To secure a Flush Set stone you only need to burnish the top edge of the metal down onto the stone.

Do not attempt to tighten a flush set stone by hammering on the metal surface, forcing the metal over the stone.  This causes a dip in the surface surrounding the stone, resulting in an unsatisfactory appearance.  If you use a hammer and punch (or hammer handpiece on your flex-shaft) be certain to hold the punch at a 45 degree angle to the metal surface and tap lightly ONLY on the edge of the metal, until it is worked down over the stone.

Flush Setting Wedding Band

Before attempting to Flush Set a stone in a wedding band, measure the thickness of the band.  The band MUST be at least as thick as the stone is deep or the culet of the stone will protrude into the finger hole.

Flush Setting with a Burnisher

When flush setting use a burnisher with a flat tip, rather than a rounded tip.  The rounded tip will not allow you to burnish the metal at the point of contact with the stone, which may cause difficulty tightening the stone.  A flat tipped burnisher makes full contact with the metal allowing you to burnish the metal tightly against the stone.

Flush Setting

The most important part of flush setting is cutting the seat.  If the seat is cut too large, you will not be able to tighten the stone without marring the surface of the metal.  Cut the seat too small, and you may chip the stone trying to force it into its seat.
