Organized Shop

A well-organized and uncluttered space, where all workers can get to everything easily, will add professionalism to your workshop.  A tidy, well-planned and properly equipped work environment will increase productivity.  Most of all you should organize your workshop in a way that is efficient for you.  You should derive pleasure from the organization and decor of your workshop.  It will indirectly affect your mood, and the quality and quantity of your work.

Foot Petals

Fasten down foot petals on your flex shaft and steamer.  So they cannot get kicked around and time is not waste looking for them.

Saw Frames

Keep two saw frames at your bench for two different size saw blades. Both are always ready for use, and you will not have to change saw blades just because the wrong size blade is in the frame.

Jewelry Bench Ergonomics

Position your tools on your bench according to your movements for maximum accessibility.  Place the tools closest to you, the ones used most often, along the path your hands and arms naturally move.  You do not want to move out of your way, or do any extra work to get to a tool or put it away.

Jewelry Shop Ergonomicc

Small changes in the ergonomics of your work space can save you hundreds of steps each day.  Minimize wasted effort by using efficient work triangles between your supplies, the tool being used, and your workbench.

Jewelers Bench

Purchase roll cage padding from an auto parts store.  It's similar to pipe insulation however, it doesn't compress as easily (pipe insulation is only marginal as a pad and quickly deteriorates).  This can be used at several places on your bench to aid your comfort.  For example, cover the leading edge of your bench pan, or place on your armrest.  It can also be places where your handpiece of your flex-shaft hits when you let go.

Jewelry Tool Organization

Organizing your tools is not just a matter of having a place for everything and everything in its place.  It requires putting tools in an order that is meaningful to you, the person who uses them.

Position tools in a manner that requires little, if any, extra movement in order to retrieve them and put them away.

Small Jewelry Tools

Attach small tool used often, such as a chuck key, to a retractable key chain.  Mount the case to the side of your bench or under the bench top.  The tool will always be in easy reach and when you are finished using, let go and the tool will put itself away.

Jewelers Tool Maintenance

Time allowed for shop maintenance is always time well spent.  Keeping cheaper tools in top condition is better then having expensive tools out of adjustment and poorly maintained.

Gravers

Have two or three gravers of the size you use most often.  If one is dull, use another one.  When all are dull, sharpen them at the same time.  Sharpening three gravers at the same time takes less time than sharpening one graver three separate times.  Also if a tip breaks or dulls in the middle of a job, you can finish the job and sharpen when finished.  This saves time from having to keep stopping to sharpen a graver.
